Who are you today?

Knowing yourself is always easier said than done. We always have a general idea of who we are, what we like to eat, whether we enjoy staying up late vs getting up early, television shows we like to watch, whether we read or not. But when it comes to the more existential questions most people have a bit of a problem. I need you to be honest with yourself for a moment. Then answer these questions: WHERE will you be 5 years from now? WHAT will you be doing? WHO will you be with

Now this only works if you’re honest about where you will be based on your current life trends.

Now ask yourself these important follow up questions: Where do you WANT to be? Who do you WANT to be with? What do you WANT to be doing?

If you can’t answer these questions right now its ok. But it’s good to know that a very important part of knowing yourself is identifying where you will likely be based on what you’re doing currently and determining what you actually want from your life so you can pursue it…or at least go for a  happy medium of what you want vs what will actually happen. My personal belief is that we all want to be happy with our lives (frankly we should be happy) and what’s essential to achieving that is knowing what we want by identifying who we are. Yes, you know your name, where you are from, where you went to school and where you work. But where is your future and what needs to change in your present to achieve that? Also, what are your habits, things you love about yourself and things you’re not too fond of. You can’t change a narrative without knowing how it was written initially.

I’m sure someone out there is wondering why they should bother being self aware? My response is its just amazing to know what excites you (or at least finding out what does) or why you react you do to certain situations or why you date the people do you even if it isn’t fruitful or why hugs make you feel at peace with the world. You are a combination of narratives, complex variations; not just statistics to be riddled off or bullet points on sheet of paper. Life isn’t a destination or even a score card; life is a story and we each have a wonderful one to share…you just need to sit down and learn to read the book that you are.

Frankly, I’m still learning on reading who I am but I feel as if I’m rewriting the pages after I’ve read them a few times. Nothing wrong with changing the narrative, I actually enjoy reading a different book each time I sit down. I find this cliche’ to say but “Its important to know where you came from, so you know where you’re going” (but I will add), “So that you can identify who you are and then make your way to who you want to be.”
