TV Series Review: Cloak & Dagger

So this tv series is one of the best of Marvel's tv series since it is so far removed from the MCU (It takes place in New Orleans) and the character progression (as well as regression is believable). The only major connection is having a cop from NYC being present but the actors portrayed their roles exceptionally well.

Lets talk about the story a little bit. Eight years ago Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) and Tandy (Olivia Holt) lost important family members, almost drowned and gained their abilities (come on, its Marvel, this is what they do). But when we see them as teenagers Tandy isn't the sweet daddy's girl we met earlier but has become a terror to society (especially dumb rich boys) and Tyrone is working extra hard to deal with his anger over the loss of his brother while trying to be the best son his parents could have asked for). When these two meet again their powers clash  (Tandy produces a white light) while Tyrone produces darkness (you could say this is racist but just stick with it, oh, I didn't mention Tyrone is a black male while Tandy is a white female? Well this matters but then it doesn't...stay with me).

As things progress Tandy realises when she touches people she can see their hopes (later she realises she can also steal hope) and Tyrone realises he can see peoples fears (later he can becomes able to make them relive their fears) but together then can explore a person's subconscious. Her secondary power is to produce daggers and his is to teleport through darkness but only seeming to control it when his head is covered (yup, clock & dagger...not creative but interesting at the least). I call their signature abilities secondary since alot of the show explores how they can affect people by exploring their fears and hopes. It also focuses on how they are two sides of the same coin (as they can occasionally intrude on another's mind).

They both have unresolved issues concerning the death of their loved ones so the major push is to seek resolution while  exploring their new abilities. But there is a subplot where New Orleans has been always saved from disaster by teams of two (a divine pairing as its called) and they are suspected to be the ones to change the City's fate. I won't get into full detail but it concerns Dagger's drama and the greed of an oil company whose CEO wants to gain power to compete with the Starks and the Rands (yup, nod to New York's Avengers and Defenders). That   CEO also had . wonderful twist on the old Spiderman saying that suited his whole motive and it was  "With great power comes even more power" (yeah, I laughed at this one).

Cloak & Dagger made me laugh, cry and root for these two to succeed. I wish Marvel would continue this (and some of its other TV series...and not lock them behind Disney+... which is something I cannot access outside of the US, unlike Netflix). Give the series a chance...these characters will grow on you.
