Success, What is it?

So I'm sitting here at 3am (not able to sleep sadly) doing what one does when they can't sleep. Playing video games, scrolling Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and listening to the Tim Ferris Show (okay so thats not what everyone does..but I do). Now on this podcast he always ask "Who would you consider successful and why?" and I had to ask myself what I define as success -- so I had to make a list of 5 characteristics I believe make up a successful person.

1. Having a reasonable handle on finances
I struggled with this because initially I thought one had to be rich (hell, I'd love to be rich) but when I dwelled on it I realised that one can be rich and still have a poor handle on their finances but people with little income who manage their cash effectively are a lot better off. So being successful is proper management of what you have (and don't).

2. Accomplishing set goals
A person who can set goals for themselves and achieve them (with little or great effort) is an achiever who is able to not only define what they want but will take what it gets to go after it. This may seem simplistic but look at the people you know who challenge themselves and how it feels to be around them after they have achieved what they aimed to do.

3. Having a trusted circle of loved ones
Humans are inherently social creatures and we don't require mass amount of people around us but a select group of people (friends or family) that we can rely on when we need them. If you can go it alone then I tip my hat to you but having people you cherish and who cherish you is something I deem to be important.

4. Coping well with setbacks
Someone who can easily deal with a setback knows that things don't always go according t plan but don't get deterred -- these stubborn individuals look at an obstacle and find another means to attack it or pursue their goal from another angle. They know that failing provides essential lessons they need to learn.

5. Being happy.
Cliche? Maybe. But people who know how to put in the work thats necessary but can take the time to thoroughly relax are priceless -- they know the value of busting their ass off as well as how essential it is to recharge and reap the rewards of their labor.

These 5 points  are what I believe makes up a successful person. Do I know people who have attained these points? Yes. Do I feel I am successful by these standards? No, but I'm working on it.

But tell me how you define success.
