Opportunity Calls

Opportunity doesn’t call very often but when it does we owe it to ourselves to answer as quickly as we can. Some of the most successful or happier people in life don’t pass up chances to go after what they want and thats something I’ve taken longer to appreciate than I care to admit. In my own life I realise that I’ve passed up some amazing opportunities because of my own fear (yes hindsight is 20/20 but some of these chances were very much obvious in the moment) and many times opportunity does not appear in the form you expect (or hope for that matter).

We all want something out of life — something you want to achieve, someone you want to be with, places you want to go, things you want to have. Its easy to say “Work hard enough and you can fulfil your wishes” but that work is generally tougher than most people will care to believe or admit for that matter. And I’m not talking about doing a little bit there and here or simply saying you have what you want (they call that lying where I’m from…), I’m referring to actually working — spending the hours researching, weeks of practice, learning what you need to improve yourself, expressing what you feel. Actually putting in the time and not simply the lip service (Read Mastery by Robert Greene, it will help some… I promise).

The crucial part of achievement is learning when to seize an opportunity granted to you. And it won’t always be gift wrapped with a fantastic bow. It sure as hell may not be easy to see either. Won’t be from that famous celebrity you know and love. The person you are yearning for sure as shit isn’t gonna change their mind just because you’re stalking them (please don’t do that…stalking is bad unless you’re hunting animals..not people!). Opportunity can appear dressed as one of your friends referring you to someone who knows someone else simply because you are reliable and good at what you do. It might be dressed as that person you have friendly banter with at the food store or bank. It could be in that drama you’ve yet to actually write and show off to the world. Those selfies you post could be the start of a career for you. That friend of yours who supports you constantly might be the love of your life that you never bothered to acknowledge.

I”m not trying to tell you to start looking under each rock for some sparkling opportunity. I’m telling you to be more than who you are, let your actions speak for you and be a bit more observant. Sometimes the things we chase after are a lot closer than we originally anticipated and other times we are running after the wrong things — thats something you need to decide for yourself and I’ll be the first to tell you that isn’t easy at all. Opportunity will call, knock, it could slap you upside the head…hell, it might even run you over or simply whisper in your ear. You will be shocked, you may not understand when it arrives but for the love of life don’t let it get away! Chase it if you have to, just don’t miss that chance.
