Kind, Stupid or a bit of both

Imagine you are inside your bank making a deposit at the ATM. You select the option that provides you an envelope and as the envelope is pushed out a $100 bill is forced out with it. No one sees you grab the bill with the envelope. You make your deposit as normal. Now you have the choice of leaving with the cash as if nothing happened or reporting it to customer service. What do you do?

I ask because I had this incident happen to me on Friday and without much thought I took it to customer service. Many of you would ask “Why didn’t you take the cash!?” (and I’m asking myself that same question) but my response to you is “What if it was your $100?” or “What if you were the person who had to add it all together?” (between deciding if the machine was wrong or if the person adding it was wrong I’m sure people are likely to believe the machine most times). That money would have to come from somewhere and someone would have to pay for it. Honestly as much as I could have used the extra money at least I don’t have that constant nagging feeling I did something wrong.

We go through our days thinking that our actions don’t mean anything but in reality there is always a reaction to whatever action you take. That one person you smile to when you say good morning could have been having a bad day till that moment or those people you gave the finger too might get so caught up in that action of yours they crash into someone (yes these are a bit extreme but the point is with every step, smile, wink, breath you take you are effecting someone). We love to think ourselves as solitary beings but we are social creatures that thrive or perish as a result as each person around us — this is why we are told to mind the company we keep, because they will either help or hinder you. I’m not sure about you but I’d rather be a farmer of sorts instead of a locust (yeah I tried to work a farmer analogy but hey, it’s late and I just came from having a few drinks :P ).
