Junkanoo Carnival 2016

The Junkanoo Carnival has been the centre of much controversy in the Bahamas since its first attempt in 2015 but in all honesty it is an amazing experience! It is the "Home Coming" celebration that Nassau needs for the sense of community and overall enjoyment. For those who aren't aware a homecoming celebration is generally held in each family island (different settlements) and its a time for those from the community (or have roots in it) to return and kind of bond with everyone who has ties to said community (kinda like one huge party that includes your entire town...or island in some regard).

Lets look at the pros (strictly looking at the music portion):

It was extremely well lit leading to the park so there was no sense of danger when walking toward the event.
There was a parking lot near the event that was able to host the multitude of people in attendance.
Police presence was adequate (and their response time was on point). They seemed to be on point in their coverage while not interfering with the overall mood of the event.
Last minute ticket purchases were on point (if you used a credit card) and it was so quick you walk up and get in ($25 was a decent price for a concert).
The park itself had adequate lighting so it was dark enough to ensure people didn't feel under a microscope and light enough to see everything around you.
Destra's performance was amazing (I arrived late so I missed Wyclef :( and some of the other featured artists).
The lighting of Fort Charlotte was on point! Loved the blue glow it gave.

Now the cons (can't have pros without em):

Bar was understaffed (not such a big deal but waiting for your drink isn't as fun as enjoying said drink).
Prices weren't on signs so there was the constant need to price check desired items with the staff.
Restroom stalls had no water (yup, I peed and didn't wash my hands...So to all the people whom I touched after that....hahahahahaha! but seriously I used some of my Jack and Coke to clean my hands so calm down.)
The wrist bands are sexy as hell but I really wish they were easier to take off without damaging them (I'm keeping mine on since my first attempt to cut it off without damaging it left me with a gash in my finger....Note to self: don't use a Karumbit to cut hard plastic with little sleep and much liquor)

Overall it was an enjoyable experience and its something we should encourage instead of tearing down. Now there might be more cost effective ways of doing it but it is the kind of event our country (okay so this island) needs to build a sense of unity. Hell, they might not have gotten so much flak if they had called it "Nassau's Homecoming" but then there's always someone you will piss off no matter what you do.
