Goal Setting

Goals…

We talk about them sometimes in large gatherings, on dates, with people we respect or are intimidated by. But how many of us actually sit down and talk about what we want to achieve with ourselves? Not just what we want long term but the short term too. You could ultimately plan to be a doctor in 7 years but what will you do this month? This week? How’re you going to achieve what you want to do? Tell me the steps.

Okay, so it may seem as if I’m bombarding you with questions that you don’t have the answers to but calm down. You can take your time to be introspective, ask each one and slowly search for the answer…or just let it come to you. Goals don’t have to be strictly associated with career. It could concern fitness, home improvement, self development or creative works (yes, you can be creative on a deadline…it actually isn’t that bad). For those of you who ask “what about business goals?” or “what about relationship goals?” I have to say that as nice as those are good to have there is a bit more communication involved and more than you—right now I want you to focus on what you are in full control of. And yes, you are in charge of your life, your weight, your career and your creativity…you just need to realise it yourself.

Once you have asked yourself what you want it makes sense to write it down (trust me, writing this stuff down helps make it feel a bit more tangible, as if you can reach out and touch what you want). Then you have to ask yourself what you need to do in order to achieve this goal—once you establish those steps then you can list them under your goal. Make the steps something thats obtainable, realistic and something you won’t beat yourself up over if you don’t get it but if you give it the extra bit of effort then you can make it. For example I have given myself the goal of “Losing 10lbs this month” with one of the steps being “walk at least 2 miles a day” — which is doable for me because I pace and giving myself a determined distance to adhere to makes it manageable and if I go over then I feel golden (especially since I won’t be killing myself).

We all want something and sometimes we neglect to have that conversation with the one person who matters in our decision making process, ourselves. Look after yourself, define what you want, list the steps to get there and start doing them — Its the only way you will get what you want or need out of life.
